Yankee pensioners in Ireland 1845-1905

An interactive map with biographical info and addresses of 700+ women, men and children who received U.S. pensions in 19th century Ireland has been created by Damian Shiels.

From his website:

This major new interactive map has been compiled from multiple sources across my fifteen years of research on the U.S. pension files. It provides details on more than 720 people who were being paid pensions in Ireland by the  United State Government, payments based on military  service rendered between c.1845 and 1905. No less than    80 percent of the pensions were the result of participation in the American Civil War or earlier conflicts.

Many of these pensioners were women. They were either widows of men who had died in service or afterwards, or dependent mothers who had relied on their sons in the military for financial support. Others were claimed by dependent fathers or minor children under 16. Many more were veterans themselves, some of whom had been wounded or injured in uniform, or were suffering from debilities based on their age.

Fascinating! Check it out here.
