Wikipedia Editors
If you’re a blog reader, chances are good you’re familiar with Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia created and edited by volunteers around the world.
Have you ever seen a mistake or omission on Wikipedia? Ever wished you could edit an entry or add your own facts to an article?
You can.
A slideshow created by Wikimedia DC walks you through the simple steps of becoming a Wikipedia editor and offers important guidelines. Once you become an editor, you can edit any existing Wikipedia page you like.
Wikimedia DC created the slideshow for a March 2018 workshop at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) headquarters. Writing about the workshop, Madeline Alvis, DAR Congress and Special Projects Coordinator, said, “In organizing this event I was surprised to learn that of the 1.5 million biographies on Wikipedia, only 17% are about women, and only 10% of Wikipedia editors are female… it seemed fitting our theme would be Influential Women in American History…Our goal through this workshop was to help these women’s important stories become more detailed, accessible and well-known.”
While that’s the background of the slideshow, its content applies to anyone interested in becoming a Wikipedia editor. You can make a difference!
