Resolutions for 2020

Resolutions for 2020

Here we are in the final hours of 2019, thinking about the fresh slate a new year brings.

Do you make new year's resolutions? Instead of resolving to exercise more or eat less, we might be more successful if we made specific genealogy commitments. Like what?

  • Join a local genealogy or history society. Visit their library. Take a class.
  • Write a story about one of your ancestors. Do some research around context, e.g., What were their lives like? What type of work did they do? Did they always live in the same locale? If they moved often, why?
  • Order a DNA kit, for yourself or one of your relatives. Read more about how DNA can facilitate your research. Join a DNA group.
  • Make progress on organizing your family history records. Start with one box, or one drawer, or one family line.
  • Purchase a subscription you've been wanting/needing. Newspapers? Military records? A genealogy magazine?
  • Arrange to spend some time with that aunt/uncle/cousin. Bring old photos, share stories and ask questions before it's too late.
  • Make a road trip.Visit family graves. Research property records where ancestors lived.
  • Attend a genealogy conference. See and hear national and international experts on the subject.
