Pure dead brilliant!

Pure dead brilliant!

In other words, we've had a wonderful week in Scotland. And how I'm enjoying Scottish slang! While my head is crammed full of history (e.g., names of kings and queens, clans and battles, and assorted other bits of miscellanea), I've been charmed by the way the stories have been delivered. From our base in Edinburgh, we travelled north as far as Inverness, west to Glencoe, and east to St Andrews. Despite not doing any family history research here in Scotland, my husband and I walked through several graveyards. (He's a good sport!) We visited castles, palaces, churches, museums, and a whisky distillery. Although we didn't see Nessy on our Loch Ness boat ride, we were happy our gift to the fairies at the Hermitage brought days of warm sunshine. Most evenings were topped off with a wee bit of Scotch; our Inverness pub mates hailed us with spirited political opinions about last year's Scottish independence referendum. We sat for a time in the Scottish Parliament and heard their discussion about relief for the Syrian refugees. It was particularly memorable to be here as new history was being made. This week Queen Elizabeth became the UK's longest-reigning monarch, and on that day she officially opened the new rail link from Edinburgh to the Scottish Borders. On our daily hikes, each breathtaking view seemed more spectacular than the one before. Scotland is a bonnie place to visit, and we hope to return.
