Petition to stop the closure
The National Archives facilities in Chicago and San Francisco are facing closure, with records potentially transferred to distant locations with rather ambiguous plans and communication.
These regional archives hold important federal court, naturalization, immigration, Native American, military, maritime, internment, and other records—many of which are not available online. For genealogists (both professional and hobbyist), relocating these collections could make research more difficult, expensive, and dependent on long-distance access.
A petition started by a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Grant Din, is asking the National Archives and the federal government to pause the closures, consult the public, and consider alternatives that preserve regional access and archival expertise.
