No Silver Bullet

No Silver Bullet

We've been studying Bill's upgraded FamilyTreeDNA results. Unfortunately we've found no "silver bullet."  The upgraded results include 35 Y-DNA matches, but the closest two have a genetic distance of 5. None of the matches share our surname, and no one reports ancestors in close geographic proximity to any of Bill's.

Looking at the FamilyTreeDNA website reminded me about the progress we've made in our own family history search in the past six years. Bill originally submitted a DNA sample in early 2009, and the results weren't helpful to us at that time. Nonetheless, through research and luck we've since discovered the Hickey townland in County Tipperary and met Bill's (maternal) Swedish second cousin who took us to the birthplace of their grandfathers. DNA didn't get us there, but I trust it will advance our knowledge in coming years.

I recommend following Judy Russell's blog, The Legal Genealogist. Her posting, "Most Bang for DNA Bucks," with related updates/responses/remarks can be read here.
