Marking the centenary
The year 2016 is the centenary of the Easter Rising and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. Many commemorations will mark those momentous events. Here are two that were recently announced:
1. For the first time Ireland has issued a circulating euro coin to mark an event in Irish history. The designer of the coin, Emmett Mullins, describes it as "featuring a depiction of the statue of Hibernia on top of the GPO where she has witnessed the events of 1916 and watched the growth of a nation since the Rising."
Commemorative coins and coin sets can be purchased through the Central Bank: www.centralbank.ie/paycurr/collector/Pages/Coinsets.aspx.
2. An online exhibition, "Inspiring Ireland 1916: Weaving Public and Private Narratives," will use digitized photos and other items to tell the stories of the Rising and everyday life in those days. The project is a collaboration between the National Library of Ireland (NLI) and the Digital Repository of Ireland. The exhibitions will come online over the next six months.
