Marjory Stoneman Douglas
The latest school shooting in Florida is too horrific to write about here, but the woman after whom the school was named has a Minnesota connection.
Marjory Stoneman was born 7 April 1890 in Minneapolis. She graduated from Wellesley College with straight A's and was (prophetically) elected the honor of "Class Orator." She became a journalist, women's suffrage activist, and staunch conservationist.
The National Park Service calls her "Defender of the Everglades" and posts information about her contributions on their website: www.nps.gov/ever/learn/historyculture/msdouglas.htm.
Douglas lived to the age of 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration.
