Given names, Nicknames, Gaelic names

Given names, Nicknames, Gaelic names

Finding one's ancestors is difficult enough without the challenge of conflcting and confusing first names. Different records, in different time periods, may reflect different names. Is it the same person or not? In my research, Mary has been Polly, Molly, May, and even Mamie.

But have you encountered Gaelic names? That's a different kettle of fish and even more complicating! The 1901 Irish Census might reflect an English name, while the 1911 Census has an Irish name you've never seen before.

Ireland XO has created a guide to "Old Irish (Gaelic) Boy Names and Their Meaning" and an index to "Old Irish (Gaelic) Girl Names and Nicknames." If you've hit a brick wall because of first names, these articles could be your key to success.
