Brooklyn

Brooklyn

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? Oscar Wilde opined on the subject in his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying.  Don't worry, you won't find topics so deeply philosophical at this blog! Today I'm simply sharing information about a new movie in which art models itself around the story of a 20th century Irish immigrant. "Brooklyn" tells the story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. The film is directed by John Crowley from a screenplay by Nick Hornby, based on the novel by Colm Tóibín. "Brooklyn" has received positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gives a rating of 100% on its tomatometer, calling it a "rich period drama that tugs at the heartstrings as deftly as it satisfies the mind." Thanks to Fern for passing along this suggestion.
