Here's the lesson I learned already this morning: do not search for blog topics before having a cup of coffee. I was cruising various websites to see 'what's new' in the genealogy world and read FamilySearch's press release about new additions to their collection. When I saw "New York Index to Alien Crewmen", I pictured extraterrestrials who'd been discovered and ejected from our ships and ports. I quickly came to my senses. The FamilySearch description further states, "This collection contains indexes to alien crewmen who were discharged or deserted at the Port of New York, New York, May 1917-November 1957." The file includes over a million names. Not all are crewmen. I found women's first names and when I saw an entry for Mrs. XXX, I queried for "Mrs." as a first name. I found nearly 25,000 results. Results popped up for every family surname and ethnicity I've researched, making me oh-so curious about the stories of people reflected in this collection. I better go make a pot of coffee.
