"Townland of Origin" Blog
Last May I posted about Joe Buggy and Shane Wilson and their database of Irish city directories (found with maps and more at http://www.swilson.info/). However, I regret that I failed to keep up with Joe's blog called Townland of Origin. Here's Joe's description:
The primary focus of this blog is Irish genealogical research in North America. It is hoped that the posts will assist researchers in the hunt for their ancestors' townland of origin in Ireland.
The temptation is strong to start researching in Ireland when you know, or find out, that you have Irish ancestry. But the clues to where your ancestors are from can often be found in the U.S. or Canada.
Ultimately, it is hoped that the blog will help get you one step closer to your townland of origin.
For over a year Joe has been blogging about locations and genealogical resources all over the U.S. and Canada. His blog archive can be searched by state or by theme. I surfed backward chronologically and found many helpful and intriguing articles that grabbed my attention because of the migration routes of my husband's Irish ancestors, e.g., Maryland Catholic church records and Oneida County (NY) newspaper references. Joe has shared much valuable information, and his blog warrants a close following.
Joe is unusual among genealogists in that he's under 35 years old! His recently-published book, Finding Your Irish Ancestors in New York City, was reviewed in the July 2014 edition of The Septs, quarterly journal of the Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI).
