Reasons to visit on Irish Saturday
Saturday, December 9, is Irish Saturday at the Hoffman Research Center, located in the Minnesota Genealogy Center in Mendota Heights. IGSI volunteers will be available to help you start your research or talk through that problem ancestor. The library is open Saturdays, 10 AM - 4 PM (weather permitting).
In addition, IGSI points to these special benefits:
Discovery Maps of Ireland: for sale
We will be selling Discovery Maps of Ireland on Saturday for $5.00. Mark Hartnett will have a table setup by the front desk at the Hoffman Research Center. We will not have the ability to process credit card orders and the sale will require cash or check. These are lovely maps that may not be the latest edition. However, if you are looking for more details about the area your ancestors were from, these are amazing maps. We are investigating ways to sell these via our website in the future.
Irish Ancestors and other resources at the library
Three patron workstations in the Hoffman Research Library are now configured with John Grenham’s Irish Ancestors website subscription for Irish ancestral research. This will allow patrons and volunteers to search the paid site at no cost, at least until the 1-year IGSI trial ends on Feb. 5, 2024.
You can also access FindMyPast, Ancestry.com, Fold 3 and Newspapers.com within the library using the library's subscription. These subscriptions are available from library workstations and your own device.
Admission fee for non-members
Admittance to the MGS library is FREE to IGSI members. ($10 fee for non-members).
Note: The Discovery Series maps being sold were published by Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) and comprise the remaining inventory from IGSI's old online bookstore. Yes, you may now find Ordnance Survey maps online. Yes, these particular maps were printed a few years ago and the selection is limited. However, $5 is the best genealogy bargain you'll find anywhere and definitely worth a drive to Mendota Heights.
