John Steinbeck looks for his Derry roots
I was fascinated to read the Tower Museum's Facebook page "on this day" entry:
On 17 August 1952 John Steinbeck wrote from his hotel in Derry to his friend and editor, Pat Covici, "We just got here. We're on a hunt for the seat of the Hamiltons...It should be a very interesting experience...However, whatever happens it will be a story to tell."...

Brian Mitchell tells us that full details of Steinbeck's trip to Ireland, with photographs, were recorded in Colliers' Magazine of 31 January 1953.
The Tower Museum posting was so timely for me! A month from today my husband Bill and I will be in Derry with the IGSI tour of Ireland. While there we may "hunt for the seat" of my McKlveen ancestors, but no matter what we'll have a story to tell.
