Damian Shiels is author of the book, The Irish in the American Civil War, as well as a blog by the same name. In her blog today Claire Santry reports that Shiels was recognized at the Irish Blog Awards in October for writing the best Arts and Culture Blog. Santry also recommends a recent posting entitled "Mapping Confederate Irish Veterans in 20th Century Alabama," found at: http://irishamericancivilwar.com/2015/11/29/
mapping-confederate-irish-veterans-in-20th-century-alabama/. Shiels is a "conflict archaeologist and military historian" with remarkable knowledge on the subject of the Civil War Irish. You will be impressed by the detail and breadth of his postings. Querying by surname or location brings up more intriguing articles than you can possibly digest in one sitting! Another search option is by military unit (under "Categories"), e.g., 17th Wisconsin. If your Irish ancestors served in the War Between the States or if you have a special interest in the Civil War, Shiels' blog is a must-follow resource.
