We recently heard from Dr. Jane Lyons, owner of the website http://www.from-ireland.net. She began transcribing graveyards in Ireland in 1996 and is now in the process of posting photographs on her website.

She reported the following numbers of photos: Kilkenny County - 4616 Laois or Queen's County - 6774 Clare, Cork, Kerry, Kildare, Limerick and Offaly Counties - 2626 She also has albums of miscellaneous views of places in Ireland. Dr. Lyons reports this will be the largest collection of freely available and accessible Irish Gravestone photographs on the net. It was created by an Irish woman and is coming out of Ireland.

Currently, the  index to names on various gravestones around Ireland consists of only 19,200 names. It will be replaced by a new index which will include all information readable from photographed headstones. Lyons also has the source documents from which she made transcriptions in the 1996-1998 period.  This is invaluable since today many of these stones are now unreadable. Copies of all the early transcriptions are now held by Abbeyleix Heritage House, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.  Copies of those documents will also be available on the website http://www.from-ireland.net. You may want to check this site periodically as more information is added.
