IGSI Surname Search
It's been a busy week here in Lake Woebegone, as Garrison Keillor says every Saturday on his radio show "Prairie Home Companion." I have much about which to write, just little time to do so.
If you follow Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI) on its website, you know we've been struggling for several years to get all features back in working order. Our site upgrade in 2011 did not meet our expectations, to say the least. Bob Z, our hard-working volunteer web editor, announced this week that the "Surname Search" feature is finally operational! The link can be found under RESEARCH on the toolbar at: www.IrishGenealogical.org.
Bob reports there are 35,000 entries, all coming from GEDCOM files submitted to IGSI over the years (prior to 2011). Fields are searchable by surname, Irish location and U.S. location. The name of the member who is researching the surname is shown.
For now, individuals don't have the capacity to enter new surnames but enhancements are planned.
Here's the bad news (for some of you): you must be an IGSI member to view the "Surname Search" database. Now's the time to change that. "Join" can be found under OFFERINGS on the IGSI website.
