Glasnevin Cemetery
Today Bill and I arrived in Dublin and met others who will be on the Ireland Genealogy Tour sponsored by Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI). As gentle rain fell, we enjoyed a guided tour of the historic Glasnevin Cemetery.
Tour guide Niall wowed us with this fact: there are more bodies below ground in Glasnevin (about 1.5 million) than still living above ground in Dublin (i.e., the current population of 1.3 million). He kept us spellbound with stories of individuals buried there, interwoven with his explanations of Irish history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the prominent national figures whose graves we visited were Daniel O'Connell, Roger Casement, Michael Collins, and Eamon de Valera. The first burials at Glasnevin occurred in 1832, and the cemetery has since grown from nine to 124 acres.
Thanks to "meticulous record keeping," the Glasnevin Trust offers an online database of burial records from 1828 to the present day for Glasnevin, Dardistown, Newlands Cross, Palmerstown and Goldenbridge cemeteries. The preview grid is free; other searches and extracts cost from 1-3 Euros.
If/when you visit Dublin, you might consider taking a guided tour of Glasnevin Cemetery. In the meantime, you can learn more about their online records here: www.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy/.
