Beara Peninsula and Bere Island Parish

Both Vita Brevis and Irish Genealogy News blogs carry an announcement about a new database launched by the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) on its AmericanAncestors.org website. If your ancestors came from the Beara Peninsula, you'll definitely want to read further. The Beara Peninsula is located just south of the scenic Ring of Kerry, a place visited by most tourists in Ireland. In 2009 Riobard O'Dwyer published a three-volume book, Annals of Beara, which comprehensively listed Beara inhabitants and their descendants. However, there was no index so research was tedious. One of the volumes has now been indexed and is searchable on the AmericanAncestors.org website. Read about the database here: http://vita-brevis.org/2016/04/new-irish-records-database/.

In addition to Annals of Beara, Riobard O'Dwyer also published four volumes of "Who Were My Ancestors?" between 1976 and 1989. One of those books was about Bere Island Parish. Bere Island, with a population of about 200, is a 7-square-mile island located off the Beara Peninsula. In 2002 Pat Cady Eaton of Minneapolis indexed O'Dwyer's book about Bere Island Parish. The Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI) has a copyrighted publication, Book Index: Who Were My Ancestors? Bere Island Parish, County Cork, Ireland, Complete Surname Index.
