The ancestral facts we labor to find, seem to us as precious as gold. Yet these nuggets can seem dry to a reader when recited as a family history. How can we make our ancestral histories engaging to our broader family? Some genealogists choose to fictionalize their histories. However, the broader audience can dismiss “recreated” scenes or “reimagined” dialogue. They want to know what really happened. At the opposite extreme if the "encyclopedic" approach

As an author of your family's history, we do not want your efforts to have an audience of only one! The "dry" facts should be used merely as stepping stones to a broader narrative. They should never be a destination in themselves. This webinar provides strategies to reach that goal for the benefit of your descendants.

Speaker biography

Carol Baxter’s career as a professional genealogist began when she was appointed Project Officer of the Australian Biographical and Genealogical Record (ABGR), which later became the Biographical Database of Australia. She edited many volumes of early colonial records. For her services to Australian genealogy and history she became a Fellow of the Society of Australian Genealogists and an adjunct lecturer at the University of New England (NSW).

Her career took a new turn in 2004 when she stumbled across a political sex scandal while writing a family history and began writing “popular history.” She is now the author of six internationally-acclaimed “historical true-crime thrillers”. The Times (London) wrote of one of her books that it’s “as lively and readable as a crime novel” while Publishers Weekly (USA) wrote of another that it’s a “thrilling biography.” One of her books has been turned into a computer game, while two are being turned into TV series.

Carol has also written many genealogy “how to” books including two on writing: Writing Fabulous Family Histories, and Writing and Publishing Gripping Family Histories. She has been a presenter at four Unlock the Past genealogical conferences on international cruise ships, teaching researching and writing skills to family historians. She is also an enrichment speaker telling her true tales of murder, mystery and mayhem to the guests on international cruise ships.

In 2021, Carol launched the Writing Fabulous Family Histories website, which includes online courses teaching genealogists writing skills and researching skills. For further information: see writingfabulousfamilyhistories.com
