What repository houses the business records of your ancestor? Where might you find the files of a relative who was working on a lineage society application?

As our families migrated westward (by foot, wagon, or rail), the records associated with them may have lingered in a variety of places. Many genealogists conclude that there may be no records for part of the family. However, there might be substantial information buried away in a manuscript collection.

Many finding aids (online and off) could lead to these nuggets that represent hundreds of years of material. One of the important aids since 1962 is the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC) which is a cooperative cataloging effort by the Library of Congress. Almost 2,000 manuscript repositories from all across North America have posted descriptions of manuscripts held in their possession.
